Product Description The popular Speedlite 580EX Flash has been replaced by the new Speedlite 580EX II Flash, which features a host of improvements, including a metal hot shoe withan improved locking mechanism for added durability, an external metering sensor for non-TTL automatic flash exposure control and a PC socket for use with non-dedicated slave triggers. Fully compatible with all EOS SLRs, the Speedlite 580EX II is gasketed for dust and moisture resistance, making it possible for users of EOS-1 class digital SLRs and many L-series EF lenses to use flash safely when shooting in dusty or wet environments.

| Customer Reviews: great value for amatuer photographer January 9, 2010 Ernst (Lake Norman, NC USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The flash unit is absolutely outstanding regardless of the application. The bracket, cord, batteries and diffuser are great value for the amatuer photographer. I take photos of parties, indoor swim meets, football games, lacrosse etc. Compact, quick set up, everything worked as advertised. If you want to spend big $ on the pro rigs, go ahead, but for my applications this worked great.
Canon Speedlight 580EX II June 24, 2008 Edward F. Lindquist (California) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was very happy with everything that was in the kit except for the quick charge battery charger. The battery charger was a piece of junk. Shortly after plugging it into the wall outlet the charger became very hot and so were the batteries. I quickly unplugged the unit and pulled the batteries out of the charger. Later I finished charging the batteries in a slow charger and they were fine. I have only had one opportunity to use the flash unit. The 580EX II worked with no problems. I simply attached it to the hotshoe on my Canon 40D and placed the plastic diffuser over it and took a time delayed photo of myself. I made no adjustments for the flash either in the camera or on the flash unit. I just put the batteries into the unit and it was ready to go to work. I haven't used the bracket adapter, that offsets the flash, but it seems that it should work just fine. It seems like it mounts to the tripod mount on the camera. And then it looks as though the bracket could then be attached to a tripod if desired. Adorama can keep those battery chargers.
A great kit, but you know how the 'extras' in a kit go. September 24, 2009 H. Hatje (UT, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I mainly bought this kit, because it offered the flash unit I wanted with a few extras which, when I checked, seemed like a good value.
Pros:
*The Canon 580EX-II flash works flawlessly with my set-up.
*The Strobo-frame is built well, feels sturdy and actually provides a less-shaky way to take portraits.
*The flash-point Flash diffuser works alright (prefer Gary Fong's stuff better). Is nonetheless well made, IMHO.
*The off-camera eTTL2 3ft. cable works well, but haven't tested it much yet to be 100% certain.
*The charger works well and has a fold-away plug similar to the Canon chargers.
Cons:
*The batteries are sub-standard and are not of professional quality. The charger did not charge two of them properly, and switching them around, they still didn't charge two of the batteries (I tried several times to get it to work).
*Batteries tend to get stuck in flash-housing when hot-off-the-charger.
*The strobo frame is designed to take portrait photos in the opposite rotation of that when using a grip (With left hand up). I found the position to be rather unnatural when trying to shoot the way cameras are set up (with right hand up). Shooting right hand up with the stobo-frame puts the flush below you. Good design, but built for non-digital cameras.
*Flash diffuser is kind of aimed at the beginner in flash-photography, essentially for me it is useless. (Make a nice tray for my batteries though).
The kit is great for beginners, and is better than the other kit I saw on here. Still, I'd've loved to see a third choice of kit for more serious-amateurs and semi-pros.
I am happy with the kit, even if I will not use the batteries nor the flash-diffuser. I can use the Strobo-frame and most certainly the flash itself.
Good product overall September 9, 2009 Patrick G. Hong (Simi Valley, CA) The flash is excellent. The diffuser is standard, ok. The batteries I wouldn't recommend for professional or semi-professional use. Keep them around for little jobs around the house. The Stroboframe is fine. The eTTL2 cord is seriously flawed. I exchanged the first one, second one came it worked for about a week. You can see the quality in the way it's manufactured is low. If you're buying this kit, buy it for the flash, not for the eTTL2 cord!
